Collective Statement

from Faith Communities

in Defense of Immigrant Rights

As faith-based organizations and institutions rooted in Western North Carolina and representing a diversity of religious traditions and beliefs, we are united in our commitment to working towards a humane and just world for all, regardless of immigration status.

We believe that all people are Beloved Children of God, important and vital members of our community, and deserving of the full enjoyment of human rights and human dignity. We believe in loving one’s neighbor, welcoming the stranger, providing safe harbor for those fleeing oppression, caring for the vulnerable among us, and standing against injustice. We recognize that these tenets, deeply rooted in all faith traditions, connect us in common and sacred purpose.

We reject a narrative that demonizes, dehumanizes, or discriminates. We reject policies and institutions that strip away basic due process and human rights protections. We reject unaccountable instruments of power that terrorize communities and tear apart families. These attacks and abuses are antithetical to our common values and threaten the spiritual and physical wellbeing of us all.

We acknowledge that faith requires action, and that we have a duty in this moment to stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors and family, in our region and beyond.

We commit to mobilize our faith communities and our collective resources in defense of immigrant rights, including through advocacy, accompaniment, and mutual aid. We commit to do this work in coordination with and following the leadership of local immigrant organizations and communities, and rooted always in our shared values of love, justice and beloved community.
